The largest of Germany's lakes, Bodensee, is crisscrossed by ferries every minute, ready to take you on a trip to Austria or Swizerland. That's because the lake is actually shared with these two countries. The best option is a trip to the Mainau Island, conquered in the 13th century by Teutonic knights. The island hosts the castle of Grand Duke of Baden, who had the habit of bringing home rare plants from abroad, so the place is a botanical paradise. The Bodensee itself, due to its near-tropical climate, is home to more than 1000 rose species.
